TRAINER/TUTOR WORKSHOP

1:1 Learning Practitioner Development Session

The Brain Learns Before the Child Achieves

A 90-minute practical and interactive professional development workshop for tutors, teachers, teaching assistants, learning mentors and SEN professionals.

This workshop explores how learning happens in the brain and how practitioners can translate this understanding into practical teaching strategies.

Rather than simply asking “What does the learner need to achieve?”, we explore:

“What does the learner’s brain need in order to learn?”

During the session, you will explore:

Learning Brain Processes
Understand key learning processes including attention, memory, comprehension, executive functioning, confidence and emotional regulation.

Recognising Learning Needs
Learn how difficulties with focus, memory, organisation, confidence, processing and task initiation can affect learning.

Turning Brain Science into Teaching Practice
Explore practical strategies that can be used during tutoring, teaching and mentoring sessions.

Real-Life Learner Scenarios
Work through realistic situations such as:

  • A learner who understands the work but cannot remember it
  • A child who constantly needs prompting to start
  • A learner who becomes overwhelmed by challenging tasks
  • A student who lacks confidence despite having strong academic ability
  • A learner who struggles to organise revision
  • A student who loses focus during longer tasks

You’ll consider what may be happening in the learning process and what you could do differently as the practitioner.

Build a Learning Schedule

We will also explore how to structure learning across a school term, rather than trying to address every learning need at once.

You’ll consider how to:

Assess → Plan → Teach → Practise → Review → Apply → Measure

and connect this to areas of choice:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Revision
  • Study skills
  • Confidence
  • Executive functioning
  • Independent learning

Show Practical Achievement

The session will introduce ways to identify and track meaningful progress beyond grades, including:

  • Attention and engagement
  • Memory strategies
  • Task initiation
  • Organisation
  • Persistence
  • Confidence
  • Independent learning
  • Academic progress

By the end of the workshop, you will have:

✔ A clearer understanding of the learning processes behind learner behaviour
✔ Practical strategies to apply immediately
✔ A framework for thinking about individual learning needs
✔ Real-life scenarios to practise your response
✔ Ideas for structuring learning across a term
✔ Ways to monitor learner progress and demonstrate achievement

This is not just about teaching more.

It’s about becoming more intentional about how you help learners learn.

Develop. Apply. Empower.
